Irish Food Writers Guild Awards 2014 - Irish cider by Stonewell Cider

IFWG Awards 2014

On the 12th of March 2014, we were awarded the Irish Food Writers’ Guild’s inaugural Drink Award. The 2014 awards were presented by the guild at an industry celebration at l’Ecrivain Restaurant.

Cork’s reputation as the food capital of Ireland received a huge boost, with six of the seven awards going to Cork producers, organisations or individuals.

Now in its 20th year, the Irish Food Writers’ Guild (IFWG) Food Awards recognise and reward producers of the highest quality food, together with industry stalwarts who devote their lives to supporting and promoting Irish food.

The IFWG Food Awards is one of Ireland’s most enduring and respected events of its kind in Ireland.

 The Judging Process

• No company or individual can enter themselves into these awards

• Every member of the Guild is invited to nominate products they believe are worthy of an award

• The products must be produced in Ireland and the main ingredient must be home produced

• The producer must be trading for at least three years

• Products are bought and paid for and a formal tasting meeting takes place where members vote, using proportional representation

Royal Bath & West Show - highly commended cider award - Stonewell Cider

The Royal Bath & West Show

The Royal Bath & West Show in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, England, plays host to the world’s largest cider judging competition each spring. Somerset is perhaps England’s best known cider making county and its cider-makers typically take home a healthy share of awards, but entries come from all over the World.

There were 16 different classes (categories) in the judging in 2013, with two of those dedicated solely to entries from outside the United Kingdom. Stonewell Cider received the Highly Commended award for ‘Best bottled cider presented to the retail trade’.

Great Taste Awards 2013 - award winning traditional Irish cider made by Stonewell Cider

Great Taste Awards 2013

Great Taste, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, is the acknowledged benchmark for speciality food and drink. It has been described as the ‘Oscars’ of the food world and the ‘epicurean equivalent of the Booker prize’. Quite simply the Great Taste logo is the sign you can trust when buying food and drink in your local, quality retailer. Winning is important to the producers as it differentiates their products from the norm and means you, as the customer, have a guarantee that the products you buy have a reliable seal of approval based upon great taste and not marketing.

With 10,000 products entered, and only 125 foods/drinks achieving the three gold stars, we are very proud to have received this award for not only our Medium Dry Cider, but also our Dry Cider. In addition to this, both ciders were named in the list of ‘Top 50 Products’, and were in contention to both a ‘Golden Fork Award’, and the overall prize of ‘Supreme Champion’, which was announced on September 9th. In the end, our Medium Dry Cider was named in the Top 15 shortlist of finalists, but lost out to Marybelle Dairy’s Greek Style Yoghurt. We did however, also walk away with a ‘Golden Fork Award’ for ‘Best Irish Speciality Food and Drink’.
